This informational text opens the doors for the students to have the ability to read, understand, and analyze a scientific/informational article. In college, students will have to read endless amounts of articles that are much different than the typical novel or poem. It'll take critical thinking skills, the ability to stick with a tough text, as well as understanding the topic and being able to read along and comprehend what's being written. Psychology Today is obviously a different prose than "The Help" or "Angela's Ashes". The tone is different, the vocabulary is different, as is the theme. Starting off with an article discussing resilience would be an intriguing opener to the entire text set-- it can serve as a sort of preview of the thinking that is to come.
